Rotary partnership brings clean water and hope to Soweto early childhood development centre
A partnership between SA based Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn and Holt & District Rotary in the UK is bringing clean water, hope, and dignity to an early childhood development centre in Soweto.
What began as a friendship and a shared desire to serve, has resulted in life-changing support for a Soweto-based early childhood development centre, offering children dignity, safety, and a healthy learning environment.
Nick Bell, a Craighall resident and Rotarian of 35 years, helped facilitate a partnership between Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn and Holt & District Rotary, in the UK. Through this collaboration, Rotary Holt adopted a sanitation and water-based project in Africa by Donate A Loo, donating £1 000 towards the installation of proper toilet facilities at Charity Day Care in Soweto.
The centre, which provides care and early education to vulnerable children, had been struggling to operate without adequate sanitation. The donation ensured the installation of safe and hygienic toilets, allowing the centre to remain open and continue serving its community.
“The toilet facilities are not just a basic need,” said the Charity Day Care management in a letter of appreciation, “they are a necessity that ensures dignity, hygiene, safety, and comfort for our young learners. Without this support, we would have been unable to keep our doors open.”
Bell, who recently visited the project site, said seeing the impact first-hand was deeply moving. “It was incredibly humbling. Clean water and proper sanitation can completely transform a child’s life. Sometimes small acts, done with love, make the biggest difference.”
His passion for early childhood development is strongly influenced by his wife’s career in early years education, reinforcing his belief that the foundation years are critical. “When children are safe, healthy, and cared for, they are given the best possible start.”
The project also highlighted the power of teamwork, with dedicated individuals ensuring the installation was completed despite personal challenges. Bell praised the structured support provided by Rotary, saying it allows compassion to be turned into sustainable action.

Proud to be a Rotarian since 1990, Bell views Rotary International, the world’s largest service organisation, as a powerful force for change. “When people across the world work together, we can restore hope and change lives… One project, one community at a time.”
For the children and families of Charity Day Care, the impact of this generosity will be felt for years to come.
