Grade 10 learner Puniya Tanje is making strategic moves on and off the board, with big ambitions in the world of chess.

A passion for chess is steadily shaping the journey of Puniya Tanje, a Grade 10 learner at Greenside High School, who proudly represents his school in the game of strategy and skill.

Puniya’s interest in chess began with a simple curiosity, but quickly grew as he noticed his own improvement. Encouragement from friends, along with the sense of belonging the game offered, further fuelled his dedication. He draws inspiration from legendary player Bobby Fischer, admiring his discipline and commitment to excellence.

Beyond the chessboard, Puniya says the game has played a key role in his personal development. It has boosted his confidence, helped him build strong friendships, and sharpened his critical thinking skills, an advantage he carries into the classroom, particularly during exams.

Now, stepping into competitive territory, Puniya recently participated in a private tournament for the first time, and is preparing to take on an even bigger challenge at the upcoming MCA Summerheat Classic. With a clear goal in mind, to win, he continues to refine his skills by reading chess books and practising regularly at home.

At school, he balances his love for chess with other activities, including rugby, showing a well-rounded approach to both sport and academics.

Looking ahead, Puniya is determined to achieve master status and continue investing in his passion. He has also expressed interest in building his collection of chess-related equipment.
For this young player, every move counts, and his journey is only just beginning.
