The repairs and completion date for the Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues excavation remains unknown

Johannesburg Water claims it has completed pipe repairs at the Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues excavation.

The excavation on Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues in Craighall may have stopped gushing clean water, but its repairs and completion time is still up in the air.

A reporter visited the muddy site which was filled with debris and broken material on March 24, with Ward 90’s councillor Renate van Onselen.

Van Onselen noted that the excavation has turned into a wasteland, “I spoke to a Johannesburg Water representative yesterday who told me that their work at the excavation is done. The Johannesburg Water workers have just left the site and said their job was to drain out rain water that has accumulated in the excavation.”

Johannesburg Water is yet to respond to questions that were sent by the publication on March 9.

Ward 90’s councillor concluded that the lack of care and intention in the repairs that was conducted by the city’s entities was disappointing.

“Cars have also been affected by this excavation, because it has taken over the lane for three months and the traffic lights have also not been working which has caused chaos for traffic.”

The publication has reached out to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to find out what the next steps of repairs are and will update the article in due time.
