Cold and wet weather to hit city skies this weekend

SAWS warns of cold fronts bringing significant rainfall, strong winds, and a sharp drop in temperatures.

Residents should prepare for cold, wet, and windy conditions this weekend as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts the passage of cold fronts across the country.

By April 18, the cold air mass will push into the central interior. Widespread cool to cold conditions are expected across Johannesburg, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers forecast.

Daytime maximum temperatures are set to drop significantly, with a pronounced wind-chill effect making it feel even colder.

The combination of cold temperatures, strong winds and possible showers could lead to a significant wind-chill factor, localised in low-lying areas and poor drainage systems, reduced visibility, and slippery road conditions.

Outdoor activities may be disrupted.

The public is urged to:
• Dress warmly and ensure homes are adequately heated,
• Use heating devices safely to prevent fire hazards,
• Exercise caution when travelling on wet and slippery roads,
• Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall,
• Secure loose outdoor objects that could be affected by strong winds, and• Monitor official SAWS updates and warnings continuously.

Motorists in Johannesburg and surrounding areas are reminded to drive with extra care over the weekend.
