San Salvador community hub builds inclusivity through creativity and connection

At San Salvador Home’s community hub, individuals with developmental disabilities are finding more than skills development; they are finding confidence, community, and a place to be seen through entrepreneurship, performance, and inclusivity.

A community club at San Salvador Home is driving a great initiative, proving that people with developmental disabilities deserve not only care and support but also dignity, opportunities, and to be treated normally.

Through the community hub, Sally’s Workshop, individuals engage in a range of creative and practical activities, including weaving, sewing, nail work, and painting.

These skills alone prove that individuals with developmental disabilities are more than capable of doing things. Instead of relying only on donations or charity, the hub encourages individuals to think of themselves as entrepreneurs, using the particular skill they know to make something for themselves.

Naomi Schauer, the community hub’s manager, stated that it is not about people just giving them things. “It’s about offering a service or product, so people want to support us, not just as it is a good thing to do, but because it’s valuable.”

The hub’s long-term vision is to help individuals build confidence to sell their work themselves. “We’re trying to help them understand entrepreneurship instead of just waiting for work, because it might never happen.”

Practical skills are not the hub’s only focus. Music and dance form part of the entertainment, allowing them to go out and perform for people.

Schauer added that there isn’t enough opportunity to grow and have fun, and that the people in the hub do not have clubs to go to, and they can’t afford concerts. So, when they go out and perform, they get to socialise and connect with others.

Upcoming outreach sessions include a market at Pine Slope City Renewal Church, 18 Sunset Avenue, from 09:00–15:00 on May 30, where there will be performances and joy to spread.

Community members are invited to come out in numbers.
