Parktown Boys’ swimmer chases Olympic dreams

Connor Cockcroft is chasing his dream to one represent South Africa on the biggest stage of all: The Olympics.

Connor Cockcroft has spent almost his life in the water.

At just 11 months old, he began swimming. Now a Grade 11 learner at Parktown Boys’ High School, Connor is making waves in competitive swimming, training up to six hours a day in pursuit of one bold goal: To become one of the world’s best butterfly swimmers and, ultimately, reach the Olympic stage.

Under the guidance of long-time coach Tertia Biffi, who has mentored him throughout his journey, Connor has developed a fierce work ethic and deep respect for the sport. “My coach has been my biggest inspiration. She’s always pushed me to be better.”

Specialising in butterfly and freestyle, Connor balances early morning sessions, long afternoons in the pool, strength training, and demanding schoolwork, a schedule that leaves little room for rest. Yet, it is the mental resilience forged through injury and setbacks that defines him most.

After enduring serious injuries and operations last year, Connor faced moments of doubt, but through discipline, family support, and personal resolve, he found his way back. “It’s about staying focused on my goals. My parents keep me motivated.”

His proudest achievement to date is earning provincial colours, a milestone that confirmed his belief that he belongs among the elite.

Now, his sights are set on international scholarships and, one day, Olympic qualification.
For Connor, swimming is more than a sport; it is his future, and with relentless dedication, he is determined to keep chasing the dream… One stroke at a time.
