Bring it on, Joburg

JOBURG - New Year's Eve seems like a distant memory as we hurtle toward Valentine's Day, and I've already begun to wonder what more this year could possibly bring.

Looking back over the month named after Janus, the God of gateways, whose double vision looks into the past and future, the theme Joburg appears to have chosen for 2014 is “Go big or go home”.

I had an inkling on New Year’s Eve that something was up.

A few friends and I began our evening at Randlords’ Diamonds in the Sky event, with a view of the city lights and the occasional firework.

As tempting as it was to spend the evening on the roof of South Point Towers, an epic journey had been planned, and had to be continued.

The four of us squeezed into a blue Chevy Spark named ‘Pluto’ and headed off to our next destination.

Following the GPS, we left behind the bright city lights, and before we knew it, we drove past the Cradle of Humankind, under a canopy of stars.

We saw in the new year at the Revolution NYE trance party, at Hornbill Lodge in the Magaliesberg; a gathering that would not be out of place in a Christina Rosetti poem.

Joburg surprised me that night, but I knew that was only the beginning.

By the time March rolls around, we will have been visited by superstar DJs and an old school blues rocker, partied in the streets to local and international performers, seen good theatre productions come and go, and celebrated the openings of art exhibitions.

I find myself asking, “What more, Jozi? Is there anything left?”

Only, deep down, I know there’s more: a lot more.

Bring it on, Joburg.
