WATCH: Big Mitch earns 100th cap
JOBURG – KES star an exciting prospect for South African cricket.
King Edward VII School (KES) first team cricket captain Mitchell van Buuren earned his 100th cap for the school on 24 October against the touring Whitgift XI of England.
Van Buuren has been dubbed as one of the most promising cricketers of his age group, having won the best all-rounder of the tournament at the U17 National Cricket Week last year.
KES coach Gordon Matheson congratulated Van Buuren on earning his 100th cap. “It was very well deserved as Mitch is a very hard-working and diligent cricketer,” he said.
The 17-year-old, affectionately known as ‘Big Mitch’ by his teammates, was rewarded for his hard work and perseverance again when he was named the Gauteng U17 Player of the Year at the annual Gauteng Cricket Board Awards.
Van Buuren earned a national call-up to the SA U19 team cricket team which toured Sri Lanka in June. The prolific right-handed batsman had a phenomenal season last year as he scored 1 060 runs at an average of 39 for the KES first team.
The stroke-making Grade 12 pupil really flourished over the past year and thanked all the various coaches who have helped him get where he is today
Earlier in June, Van Buuren earned his 100th cap for the KES first team hockey Red Sticks too.
