King Edward VII School first cricket team wins the inaugural Johannesburg High School Fitness Challenge at the WSMC.
The Wanderers Sports Medical Centre (WSMC) hosted a pre-season fitness challenge in search of the fittest high school cricket team in the region.
King Edward VII School (KES) first cricket team won the inaugural Johannesburg High School Fitness Challenge at the centre and received a fully catered experience in a private suite at the Wanderers during the T20 challenge match between the Bizhub Highveld Lions and the Dolphins.
The sports centre houses top sports medical staff servicing professional, amateur and school sports persons from all sporting disciplines in Gauteng.
Director of the centre, Craig Govender said the fitness challenge gave the schools a great opportunity and exposure to professional training. “The whole ethos of the centre is to bridge the gap between the elite and the amateur and give the young stars the same service as professionals,” he said.
Richard Das Neves of WSMC congratulates KES first cricket team coach, Gordon Matheson on behalf of the team for winning the fitness challenge.
Govender added that the vision of the centre was to create sustainability and enhance the knowledge of coaches and athletes in all spheres of sport. “We want to create a sustainable screening and monitoring system for school kids, enhance long-term athletic development and produce well-rounded athletes for Gauteng, other provinces and South Africa.”
Gordon Matheson, the first team cricket coach at KES, said fitness was sometimes seen as hard work and was tough to get the players to buy into at times. “Once it’s done, it is of a massive benefit. The wide variety of staff at WSMC caters for a host of sporting codes which add to its already professional set up,” he said.
