New head coach for SA men’s hockey announced
HOUGHTON – St John's head of hockey Garreth Ewing is selected as head coach for the South African Hockey Men.
The South African Hockey Association recently announced Garreth Ewing as the new head coach of the South African Hockey Men.
Ewing is the head coach of hockey at St John’s College in Houghton. He will now be tasked with leading South Africa through to the 2022 Hockey World Cup.
Ewing has been part of the South African set-up since 2004, working in various capacities across national levels. He has worn the hat for various roles including selector, video analyst, team manager, HP trainer, assistant coach and head coach of the South African U21 team.
It was in his role as head coach of the South African U21 side that Ewing experienced his greatest achievement when he led the side to a superb 10th place finish at the Junior World Cup in Lucknow in 2016. He was also in charge of the South African U21 side to compete in the IPT final.
Ewing has been the assistant coach for the national side since 2014 with Fabian Gregory and later Mark Hopkins. He was with the team at the FIH World League, the Azlan Shah Cup as well as the two FIH Hockey World Cups.
Ewing’s first task as head coach will be the FIH Open Series Final in Bhubaneswar, India, from 6–15 June.
Eyes will then turn to the African Olympic Qualifier in Stellenbosch in August as South Africa will look to defend the crown they won in Egypt in 2017.
The South African Hockey Association wishes Ewing the best of luck for the challenge ahead.
Ewing said, “It’s a great privilege to be appointed as head coach of the South African hockey men. I am very excited and grateful to have this opportunity to lead the team and help achieve new standards for South African Men’s Hockey.”
He said the challenges the team faces are significant both in terms of Olympic qualification and growth toward future tournaments.
“I’m looking forward to helping the team in its development,” he concluded.
