SASAPD receives R80 000 in Nelson Mandela Day initiative
BALFOUR PARK – Betway raised R80 000 for SASAPD as part of its Nelson Mandela Day celebrations.
Betway’s 67 minutes for Nelson Mandela International Day celebrations will go a long way to help South Africa Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD).
This after the company’s 5-a-side soccer tournament held at Balfour Mall on 18 July helped raise R80 000 which was donated to the association.
Among the big names who participated in the tournament featuring four teams were comedian Shampoonaiza, real name Thapelo Seemise, and football legends Edward Motale and Steve Lekoelea.
Members of the print media, current and past soccer legends, Betway staff members and ambassadors were grouped into teams to celebrate the generosity and values of Mandela.
Betway committed to donating R1 000 to the association for every goal scored during the tournament.
The company’s marketing manager, David Rachidi said such initiatives were an important part of Betway’s social commitment to the communities in which it operated.

“The important role played by SASAPD is quite significant and ties back to the wise words of Nelson Mandela when he said that through sport, we have the power to change lives,” said Rachidi.
“We are honoured and humbled to partner with SASAPD and lend a hand towards the wonderful work that they do for athletes.”
The association is the official governing body for sport for the physically challenged. It carries the significant responsibility of developing young athletes and organising national events to allow athletes to qualify for global competitions such as the Paralympics.

Most recently, the association hosted its annual national championships in Stellenbosch.
The championships catered for eight different sporting codes including para-athletics, para-swimming, judo for the blind, boccia, para-cycling, para-powerlifting, CP football and goalball.
Moekie Grobbelaar, the president of the association and former powerlifting gold medallist at the IPC Powerlifting World Championships and Paralympic bronze medallist, said the money raised would go a long way in the development of athletes with special needs.

She said the association was always in need of sponsorship. “On behalf of the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, we would like to thank Betway for their very kind donation. This donation will make an immediate difference to the athletes. The funds will be used to purchase boccia and goalball equipment that will assist to grow these sporting codes in South Africa” said Grobbelaar.
