Young tennis star earns place among world’s best at Smrikva Bowl
Leon Bezuidenhout's tennis talent is heading him to Croatia to compete among the world’s best, with big dreams and strong community support behind him.
At a young age, Leon Bezuidenhout is already carving out a remarkable path in tennis. One that is built on discipline, passion, and a deep love for the game.
Leon first picked up a racquet at the age of three during a kindergarten extracurricular activity.
What began as simple play quickly turned into something far more meaningful. By the time he was seven, he had started formal lessons and was already showing signs of exceptional promise.

His growth has been steady and impressive. Competing in national tournaments from the age of eight, Leon has dominated his age group and currently holds the number one ranking in the U10 division in South Africa.
His talent has also seen him compete comfortably against older players, earning a special exemption to play in the U12 category, where he continues to prove himself.
Training regularly at the Wanderers Club under the guidance of coach Vaughn Hunter, Leon puts in hours of focused work each week. His commitment is evident, not only on the court, but in every aspect of his life.
Beyond tennis, he thrives academically, as well as on the sports field, balancing rugby and athletics while excelling in the classroom at Laerskool Randhart.
Now, his dedication has opened the door to an extraordinary opportunity. Leon has been selected as one of only 32 players worldwide to compete in the prestigious Smrikva Bowl in Croatia this June.
He and his coach have been working for the past two years towards this milestone.

“I feel very grateful for this opportunity,” Leon said, his words reflecting both humility and determination, “and I will work hard and do my best to make my family and country proud.”
In preparation for the tournament, Leon has shifted his focus to adapting his game to clay courts. He has been working on his serves, rallies, and overall consistency, while increasing the intensity of his training. Practice matches have also become a key part of his routine as he builds mental focus for high-level competition.
He is particularly excited about travelling abroad for the first time and embracing the experience beyond tennis. “It’s going to be my first time in Croatia, so everything will be new and fun.”
While the prospect of competing against some of the best young players in the world is daunting, Leon sees it as a chance to grow.
He believes the exposure will challenge him to improve and broaden his understanding of the game. His goals remain grounded, centred on giving his best in every match, staying positive, and enjoying the experience, while quietly aiming for a place in the semi-finals.
Behind his journey stands a strong support system. His family, coach, and community have played a vital role in helping him reach this stage, constantly encouraging him and sharing in his passion for the sport.
As Leon prepares to represent South Africa on the international stage, his story is already one of perseverance and promise. With the right support, this young athlete could be taking the first steps towards an even brighter future in tennis.
