Warwick Purchase targets Fortress Invitational title defence at Houghton
Long hitter adopts a strategic approach to navigate key course demands as he aims for back-to-back success.
Defending Fortress Invitational champion Warwick Purchase keeps his focus on consistency as he returns to Houghton Golf Club, where he claimed the title in 2025.
The South African professional golfer believes his season has started positively, although he feels his results have yet to reflect his performances. Sitting 44th on the order of merit, he recorded finishes of tied for 17th and 15th in his two previous starts.

Purchase, known for his driving distance, acknowledges that Houghton requires a different approach. “I am a long hitter and gain advantages over the field due to my driving distance,” Purchase said. “This course requires placement off the tee to access the pins.”
With confidence in his putting and iron play, he believes a strong performance could put him in contention. Rather than setting a specific finishing target, Purchase is concentrating on the fundamentals, including staying hydrated, eating properly and studying his yardage book. For him, success begins with following his preparation routine rather than placing unnecessary pressure on himself.
Beyond the competition, Purchase believes the partnership between Fortress and the Sunshine Tour is vital to growing South African golf. He said sponsor-backed tournaments provide players with opportunities to earn a living, attract individual sponsors and build relationships with business leaders through pro-am events.

“The visibility that Fortress brings us as the Sunshine Tour shows the rest of the world, and definitely the South African community, that the Sunshine Tour is a brand worth investing in,” he said.
Greater investment could create more tournaments and financial opportunities, allowing professionals to build sustainable careers while remaining in South Africa.
Purchase also praised the strength of local golf, pointing to South Africans Jayden Schaper and Casey Jarvis competing successfully on the DP World Tour. However, he believes greater financial backing is needed to match the quality of talent on the Sunshine Tour.
For aspiring golfers, his advice is to remain patient and avoid comparing their progress with that of their peers. “You learn to play golf out on the golf course,” Purchase said. “You don’t necessarily learn how to play golf on the driving range.”
As Purchase pursues another strong finish at Houghton, his focus remains on preparation, trusting the process and allowing the results to follow.
