HILLBROW - Police are looking for five suspects who were involved in the robbery of a business.

Hillbrow police are looking for five suspects who were involved in the robbery of a business.

Police spokesperson Constable Mduduzi Zondo said six suspects stormed a shop on the corner of Van Der Merwe and Klein streets. Three of the suspects were allegedly in possession of firearms and demanded cash and airtime.

Zondo said the suspects took an undisclosed amount of money and airtime. “Police who were patrolling the vicinity were alerted and gave chase,” he said. One suspect allegedly fired at police and they returned fire, shooting the suspect dead. Zondo said an unlicensed firearm with a round of ammunition was recovered from the suspect.

The serial number of the firearm was filed off and police couldn’t trace its origin. Five suspects managed to flee the scene and Zondo said police were still looking for them. He issued a stern warning to criminals who were engaged in such activities. “We will not rest until we squeeze criminals out of society and lock them up in jail.”

Zondo appealed to community members who may have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to come forward.
