Miniature art comes to Hyde Park

HYDE PARK - Lovers of all things diminutive can look forward to exploring the "joy of art in the small" at an exhibition of miniature art.

HYDE PARK – Lovers of all things diminutive can look forward to exploring the “joy of art in the small” at an exhibition of miniature art.

Miniature Art Society of South Africa founder Charmian Kennealy said the exhibition will take place at Hyde Park Corner in November.

“Miniature art is nothing new or cute. It featured in every art civilisation known, and has been revived worldwide, giving rise to seven societies,” said Kennealy.

The South African society was formed in 1992, and has held exhibitions throughout the country. Since 1995, the society participated as founder members in five World Federation Association exhibitions in England, the USA, Russia, and twice in Tasmania, Australia.

“At all of these shows, our members’ paintings received great acclaim, and we have many artists who have won awards internationally,” she said.

Kennealy said the artworks had a “gem-like” quality.

“[They] are small enough to nestle in the palm of one’s hand, before lighting up a minimal space in the home… Set to catch one’s glance, [they] will soon entice one to collect more of these delightful small jewels,” she said.

The exhibition will take place from 4 until 10 November in the Exclusive Books court at Hyde Park Corner, corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nicol Drive, Hyde Park.
