Cinderella’s interactive theatre magic

Directors Jill Girard and Keith Smith reworked the Disney version of Cinderella, and transformed it into a dynamic interactive show with a contemporary message.

“Our greatest wish is to create theatre which is exciting… even though our young audiences know the stories well, we ensure there are always little twists to keep them on the edge of their seats,” said Girard.

The directors took this wish a step further, and began to rework timeless Disney films in the belief that children today respond immediately to the magic of the movies. The team also seeks to tap into the message conveyed through the story and to highlight it in a meaningful way.

“In Cinderella we focus on the message that anyone can overcome adversity with a little help and support from friends. In this day and age, children deal with so many challenges, and the tale of Cinderella relates to this,” said Smith.

“The main character is… a kind girl who is being bullied by her step-sisters. By accepting help when it’s offered to her, she comes out tops in the end.”

Through this message, children who are bullied at school may be encouraged to speak up; and the bullies themselves can learn a lesson, too.

“They learn through the mean-spirited step-sisters, that treating people badly is unacceptable and unrewarding,” said Smith.

With a strong cast, including Emma Hayden as Cinderella and Henck Conrey as the Prince, dreamlike costumes and fabulous sing-along music, Cinderella is a perfect tale for the festive season.

“Girard and I have a few surprises in store regarding the music, which we rearranged for the stage production. We want our young audience to take away magical memories… just in time for Christmas, and if they learn something valuable in the process, then that is a gift they can take away with them,” said Smith.

The play is at the People’s Theatre, Joburg Theatre complex, corner of Loveday and Rissik streets, Braamfontein, until 24 December.
