Voices of Joburg: Not aware of student affairs
JOBURG - As City Buzz took to the streets in search of another Voice of Joburg, we thought it'd be a great idea to find out what the students of Wits University had to say.
We stumbled upon Ian Schmidt who was intrigued by the live broadcast of BBC World News’ Outside Source. “What are they broadcasting,” he asked.
City Buzz explained that the television programme from London was eager to find out the real story about the #feesmustfall protests that have taken place around the country.
“Oh, I see. I’m so over these protests. I really feel that at this stage student affairs need to take a backseat to our actual academic work,” he said.
Interested, we probed the student for his opinion on the UK public eagerly awaiting information on the issues faced by South African students. “It’s stupid,” he replied.

“Why are you so interested in this broadcast if you’re clearly uninterested in the topic they’re discussing,” City Buzz inquired.
He explained that the arts are what he’s more interested in.
“I’m here studying arts, but this TV thing looks like it’s pretty interesting, right? Maybe I’ll go into TV and broadcast. You need to study journalism, I’m sure,” he said.
A seemingly viable option, he explained that he may be able to change his course if he really wanted to, but not right now.
City Buzz asked the young student if it would not be a better option to finish his degree and study for another at a later stage.
“I’m not about that life,” he said.
“If I do that then I’ll be wasting a giant chunk of my time and my parents will chuck rage if I ask them to do two degrees. Or maybe I’ll just chuck rage if I have to study another degree for another three or four years – I’d really hate that.
“Anyway, I’ve got to get to my studies because this student affairs stuff is dumb. There will be no revolution here.”
