Informal traders have a role in our economy

HIGHLANDS NORTH – 'Informal traders also contribute to the growth of our economy'

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher has come out in defence of informal traders selling their products on the corner of Athol Road and Louis Botha Avenue in Highlands North.

This follows a complaint by some residents of Highlands Gardens who say the traders make their area unsightly. They accuse them of trading illegally on the pavement and even dumping their rubbish. Fisher, however, has defended the traders unequivocally, saying they are a very important element in the local economy and need to be encouraged, supported and managed.

He said the City of Joburg is looking to grow employment and encourages economic development, adding that informal traders are also part of it. “South Africa is in a recession because of negative growth, our population is growing by 2 per cent per annum and we are going to need extraordinary efforts and interventions from each and every South African if we are going to realise our hopes and dreams.

“It must be said that our survival depends firmly on growing our economy. In our community, we absolutely have to have growth and development.”

With regard to informal traders on Louis Botha Avenue around the Athol intersection, the councillor said he has asked inspectors to regularly visit and ensure they conform to regulations. “This area is a consumer and transport hub. Entrepreneurs and traders are drawn to areas where there is a need.

“The City cannot change economic pressures, we can only have a guiding and advisory role to ensure maximum beneficial effect, taking all the differing requirements of citizens into account. In our society, we have many perspectives and opinions which need to be carefully balanced and recognised.”
