High-speed chase leads to arrest of card scammers in Sandton
A routine crime prevention patrol quickly escalated into a dramatic chase, ending with the arrest of two suspects linked to bank card scams.
In a dramatic show of dedication and skill, Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit (TRU) officers apprehended two suspects linked to bank card scams after a high-speed chase through the streets of Sandton.

The operation began during high-visibility crime prevention patrols in Rosebank on January 21, when officers received an alert from Vumacam, a surveillance network, about a silver Suzuki Swift with false registration plates. The vehicle was reportedly linked to fraudulent activities.
Acting on the tip-off, officers tracked the vehicle to Rivonia Road in Sandton, where two male occupants were spotted. As officers approached, the suspects sped off, triggering a high-speed pursuit.
During the chase, the suspects threw a black bag out of the car window. Officers paused briefly to recover the bag, only to discover it contained incriminating evidence, including card-skimming devices. Undeterred, the pursuit continued as the suspects weaved dangerously through traffic.
The chase ended at the intersection of Alma and Bowling roads in Wendywood, where officers successfully intercepted the vehicle and arrested the suspects. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed the charges against the duo, including fraud, possession of a card-skimming device, and reckless and negligent driving.

“The suspects were detained at Sandton SAPS and will appear in court soon. The vehicle used in the alleged crimes has been impounded at the SAPS Aeroton vehicle pound,” Fihla added.
This operation underscores the effectiveness of collaboration between law enforcement and technology-driven solutions like Vumacam. The swift action by TRU officers not only highlights their commitment to crime prevention but also serves as a warning to criminals operating in Johannesburg.
As investigations continue, the arrests mark another step in the city’s fight against fraud and organised crime, a fight which is gaining momentum thanks to the JMPD and its innovative partnerships.
