Rain doesn’t dampen the magic of the Johannesburg Zoo Halloween spectacular
Not even the rain could spook Joburgers away, as thousands of families turned the Johannesburg Zoo into a magical world of monsters, laughter, and memories at this year’s Halloween spectacular.
A little rain could not scare off Johannesburg’s bravest families, as more than 5 000 people turned up at the Johannesburg Zoo for a night of frightful fun beneath the city’s twinkling skies.
On October 31, the zoo transformed into a haunted wonderland, alive with ghostly laughter, twirling costumes, and the faint scent of popcorn carried on the damp air.
Families, friends, and eager trick-or-treaters arrived in their spooky best, ready to take on the drizzle and dive headfirst into the city’s most anticipated Halloween celebration.

The zoo grounds shimmered with creativity as children dashed from one themed zone to another, their faces painted with mischief and wonder.

The Weeping Hollow whispered with eerie charm, the Adams Family Home beckoned curious souls, and the Spooky Tea Garden offered giggles and treats for all ages.
Between trick-or-treat trails, movie screenings, bouncy castles, and live performances, the air was filled with the kind of joy that only comes from shared community spirit.
While the humans howled with delight, the zoo’s animal residents remained calm and cared for, under the watchful eyes of staff and security.
The event also encouraged guests to show kindness to the planet by keeping the grounds clean, reflecting the zoo’s ongoing dedication to conservation and sustainability.

“We are thrilled by the incredible turnout and community spirit shown at this year’s Halloween spectacular,” said Thanduxolo Mendrew, managing director of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.

“Despite the initial drizzle, Joburgers showed their resilience and love for the zoo. It was wonderful to see so many families laughing together and creating unforgettable memories.”
As the night drew to a close, the rain gave way to twinkling lights and happy chatter, leaving behind puddles, footprints, and the lingering promise of next year’s return.
