Atholl parkrun marks 22nd anniversary as Winston Ridge Park hosts over 100 runners
Ridge Park comes alive as local runners don tutus and celebrate milestones at the weekly Atholl parkrun.
More than 100 runners and walkers gathered at Winston Ridge Park on October 3 to mark the 22nd birthday of parkrun worldwide.
The global fitness initiative officially celebrated its 22nd anniversary on October 2, tracing its origin to a single London event in 2004 that started with 13 runners and five volunteers.

Dressed in tutus for the occasion, both regular participants and newcomers completed the 5km Atholl parkrun.

Among those taking part was Kam Naidoo, who completed his 50th parkrun at the event. Naidoo began his running journey at an inaugural parkrun in Sun City after being invited by friends who had already reached their 400th and 500th milestones. “I have since run at Rietvlei, Delta Park, and Killarney,” said Naidoo, “and particularly enjoyed Rietvlei for its larger crowd and scenery.”

First-time Atholl participant Nobuhle Baloyi started running in February for health reasons and has since made it a regular habit. Baloyi has previously completed events at Victory Park and Golden Harvest.
Organised by 17 volunteers, the weekly 5km event takes place every Saturday morning at 08:00.
