Parkour Spring Jam comes to George Lea Park Sandton Sports Club

PARKMORE – The Concrete Foundation Crew will host a Parkour Spring Jam on 5 September at the George Lea Park Sandton Sports Club in Parkmore.

The crew promotes a healthy lifestyle through the functional practice of free movement for men and women of all ages.

“We dedicate this jam to the memory of Klara Gottert, our top female parkour athlete who left us too soon,” said Shawn van Zyl on behalf of the crew.

The activities will kick off from 9am until 5pm on the day. Van Zyl explained that the idea of parkour is to use the environment as a playground, whether in a public park or walking through the streets of Sandton. Parkour is a form of training of moving rapidly through an area, typically in an urban environment, moving from one obstacle to the next by running, jumping and climbing.

“Shoes are essential and wearing clothes that don’t restrict your movement is a must,” added Van Zyl.

He said the whole parkour community will come together to share knowledge on the art of movement, and the crew instructors will give free lessons throughout the day.

“We will show students how to warm up and play using parkour, and how to train to strengthen your muscles to be able to do bigger and better things,” he added.

Van Zyl said the crew has students from ages eight up to 45 who participate in the lessons.

“Parkour is not a sport, it’s an art form, it’s how you express yourself to your own limits,” he said.

“It can be dangerous when you wish to express yourself by pushing your own personal boundaries, but that inner need to push harder grows only when you believe in yourself and trust yourself, and this happens when you get stronger and train harder. It’s an addiction of the highest order.”
