A new home at Marlboro Gardens School for owls

Hussein Moyo of EcoSolution gives teachers and learners a brief discussion on the importance of owls and how they help humans during a visit to Marlboro Gardens.

The perfect way to ensure a better future for the youth is through education and experience. EcoSolution, an organisation that specialises in non-harmful methods of pest control, also educates children on the impact of being eco-friendly.

The organisation visited Marlboro Gardens School on June 24 to donate a newly built Tyto alba (barn owl) box along with three teenage barn owls to occupy the space and held a discussion with the learners.

According to the Jordan Hardey, one of the representatives from EcoSolution, the barn owls were found at a residential area in Alexander where individuals were too afraid to remove them. The school was the perfect relocation for the animals to call home due to the vast space and the presence of rodents which falls under their food chain.

Hussein Moyo who has been working for the eco friendly organisation for more than 12 years delivered a powerful discussion about owls to the learners and their teacher, Motlatsi Zulu. “The best part about my work is educating the children and removing that stigma behind the animal in black communities.

It is important to know that are just trying to survive without harming anyone,” said Moyo. “They help us to eradicate rodents. We have been working with the school for than five years and both learners and teachers have been helpful with the campaign.”

Before heading home, Zulu shared her view of the campaign, “EcoSolution is like a rescue team since we have a rodent infestation in the area. Whenever they say that they are in need of people to look after the owls, we never hesitate as they help us with our problems.”
