4 of the most randomly defaced stop signs

JOBURG - Though they might not be artistically rewarding or even clever, there has been an influx of stop sign vandalism in the northern Johannesburg areas.

From mindless graffiti to vehement political rhetoric, no stop sign seems to be safe from young people willing to buy a can of spray paint and add their mark to Johannesburg. Love them or hate them, they will definitely put a smile on your face while you’re stuck at a pesky stop sign.

Spokesperson for Metro police Edna Mamonyane said the bylaw enforcers had identified the problem of defacing council property and are attempting to combat it.

She said, “It’s very difficult to police this problem, because it’s usually young people who are coming back from a party or club late at night who think it would be funny to deface stop signs.”

She added that though it might be fun for the vandal at the time, it is playing with safety and putting others at risk.
