Holistic fitness tips from local martial arts teacher for middle-aged men
RIVONIA – Having an emotional attachment to the goal is key because, if you feel strongly about it, then you are more likely to stay on course.
Rivonia-based martial arts and self-defence teacher, Warren Ho has a number of tips for middle-aged men who want to improve their lifestyle.
He aims to help these men with their physical and mental fitness, while encouraging the whole family to get on board, in an attempt to address a taboo topic of ‘the midlife crisis’.According to Ho, obtaining your mind, body and spiritual fitness, is a great place to start.
Ho, in his 40s, said, “Before you even start a fitness programme, be clear about why you are doing it. Identify for yourself what goals do you want achieve and why, and make it emotional. Having an emotional attachment to the goal is key because, if you feel strongly about it, then you are more likely to stay on course.”
Some of Ho’s holistic fitness tips are:
- Be realistic about your age and your physical capabilities. If you have any health issues, it is best to talk to your doctor before you start, to better understand what would be best suited to your condition.
- The best time of day to exercise really depends on the individual. I like to do early morning, before breakfast, because I find it better to train on an empty stomach. Plan your exercise time to suit your routine.
- If you are getting back into a fitness regime after a long time, or starting fresh, it is very important to start with the basics, to build a solid foundation. This includes stretching, strengthening and coordination exercises. Be consistent and you will see results.
- A full body workout that includes a mixture of training will ensure that you get a cardio workout, but also focus on increasing strength and mobility. Also training with weights ? according to your physical abilities. Be careful not to overdo, to avoid injury.
- You don’t need expensive equipment to get fit. There are loads of exercises that you can do just with the power of your body, such as push-ups, sit-ups, squats, on-the-spot running and jumping jacks.
