A festive season message from the KRA

The Kelvin Residents Association (KRA) had a year for the history books. Spokesperson Harsha Pillay shared some of the suburb’s achievements, highlights, lowlights and plans for 2021. With technology booming and crime declining, active residents took to the streets to make it safer.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to see more and more residents getting active. This is indicative of the work done over the last few years toward making the suburb safer through our close affiliations with the Sandton CPF, security companies and the Guardians patroller programme,” she said.

Some of their plans for the coming year include improving on their current security requirements. They would also like to engage with more households to participate in passive and active monitoring of the streets through various ways. There is work in progress to install CCTV surveillance throughout the suburb. They have engaged with the City of Joburg to acquire the Kelvin Sports and Recreation Centre.

There has also been a keen move to self-sufficiency with the Urban Gardens group in Kelvin started by resident Trina Matheson. Clean-up programmes were also big this year and the residents were all too happy to help out.

“It was great to see the excitement among residents to get involved in clean-up programmes in areas around Kelvin where dumping had been happening, highlighting the need for interaction resulting from the lockdown.” said Pillay.

KRA also mentioned some of their wishes for 2021.

“Our wish for KRA and our charity arm –the Kelvin Pulse group – is to bring much more joy and assistance to the children and take them out on more outings in the New Year.”

KRA chairman Haroon Moola added that they’re hoping to tackle their 2021 task list with diligence. “I can tell you we want to focus on some low-hanging fruit which we’d like to pick and find solutions to.
“Some of these include community driven activities that may assist with beatification of strategic areas, dealing with issues relating to by-laws and kick-starting some of our security initiatives. Not excluding service delivery issues with various entities.
