Hyde Park alumna goes gold

HYDE PARK – The alumna edited and co-directed the Netflix feature documentary after previously working with some of the world’s top marine researchers and underwater photographers.

Hyde Park High School’s very own Pippa Ehrlich recently took home the Oscar for the Best Documentary Film for My Octopus Teacher.

Together with her co-director James Reed, the pair accepted the award at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The alumna edited and co-directed the Netflix feature documentary after previously working with some of the world’s top marine researchers and underwater photographers.

The film documents filmmaker Craig Foster’s year-long journey of forging a relationship with a wild common octopus in False Bay.

“Parts of this story are universal to almost every person on earth embodying a universal story of love, friendship, connection and hope,” said Ehrlich.

According to Hyde Park High School’s Avril Wright, through her years at the school, Ehrlich was actively involved in all aspects of the school’s drama department which included stage managing, acting and directing.

“Ehrlich was destined for success in her chosen field, having shown great passion, talent and interest in dramatic arts during her school years at Hyde Park High School,” said Wright.

The school wishes Ehrlich great success in her future Sea Changes Project, aimed at educating people about the importance of protecting and preserving the Great African Sea Forest.

“Bringing home the Oscar is a massive achievement for the industry and to all that were involved in the My Octopus Teacher production – [it] brings enormous honour to Hyde Park High School. Well done Pippa Ehrlich and the My Octopus Teacher team.”
