Crawford learner soars for the skies

At just 17-years-old, Crawford International Sandton learner Keaton Levin reached for the skies.

The young pilot recently received his private pilot’s licence, ticking off one of his two major goals for the year.

Keaton has always had an interest in flying; he recalls constantly asking his parents to buy him a Lego set along with other smaller airplane models.

He actively began his piloting journey two years ago when he took his first lesson. Although Keaton could only commit to lessons on the weekends due to school, he was adamant to get it done and obtain his license.

“I want flying to be my career so having the licence early will give me more time to build up my hours in order to obtain my commercial licence.”

Before Keaton knew it, his training was completed and he started his flight exams. “Once I started my flight exams I had to complete all nine of them within a certain period of time so it was important to obtain my licence within that time.”

With all of the flight exams behind him, Keaton then had to accumulate 45 hours of flying time, 15 of which had to be solo flights, to qualify for final practical. The final practical included stalls, forced landing and precautionary landing during a three-hour navigation.

The young pilot now looks forward to building up his flying hours and hopefully one day he can fly for one of the big commercial companies. For now, Keaton remains committed to reaching his second major goal, passing matric.
