Drive-thru for people in need of vaccination

SANDTON – “We saw a need for it in the community. People were queuing up longer than expected. We needed a sight in Sandton for people to drive-thru,” says Mohammed Zakeer Iyoob

Ever had problems waiting in line for more than an hour for a service that would probably take less than a minute. Worry less when planning on getting vaccinated anytime soon.

Growing Gauteng Together, an organisation focusing on sustaining and developing Gauteng through action plans, teamed up with Sandton Islamic Association to form a project known as Vax in Sandton. The initiative is to assist the government in getting more individuals vaccinated.

The vaccination site in Sandton affords the public to either walk-in and get their vaccinations or to simply get vaccinated in the comfort of their car. Most participants who were getting vaccinated took the advantage of the drive-thru which only took 15 to 20 minutes.

The initiative to curb Covid-19 through the vaccination of young adults began on August 21 at Masjid-Ud Duha, located in Sandton near Riverclub.

“We saw a need for it [vaccination site] in the community. People were queuing up longer than expected. We needed a site in Sandton for people to drive-thru and get their vaccinations. There aren’t too many drive-thru places where people can sit in their vehicle and follow the procedures in a socially safe environment, their car,” said data handler of Sandton Islamic Association, Mohammed Zakeer Iyoob.

A resident, Pri Govender said, “I heard about this site through my brother and said that it’s the only drive-thru in Sandton and I happen to stay around here, so it’s convenient for me. They offer both vaccinations [Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson] as options to choose from. So when I entered the facility, I was asked which vaccination I wanted.”

Another visitor to the site, Kristen Herbsd described the process. “It was fast. They asked for the form we [participants] had to fill out and then had to decide which vaccine we wanted to take. Currently, I don’t feel any side effects so I am good.”

The vaccination site is open to the public from 09:00 to 14:30, Monday to Thursday, and on weekends, 09:00 to 16:00. The site is closed on Friday’s.
