Three officers arrested on multiple charges

Three officers appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on September 15 on charges of corruption, kidnapping and negligence of a firearm.

The trio was arrested on September 14 during a swift operation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation.

According to Hawk’s spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, the accused allegedly demanded R10 000 from an unknown number of complainants to have an alleged fraud case dropped.

“The trio allegedly seized laptops and cellphones and forced the complainants into a vehicle.

They allegedly drove to a fuel station in Sandton where they released one of the complainants to go get the demanded money.”

The matter was immediately reported to the Hawk’s and the suspects were arrested upon collection of the money.

“Police seized electronic gadgets, a firearm and ammunition for further investigation,” said Mulamu.

She added that further investigations revealed that one of the police officers had left his service pistol, ammunition and handcuffs in a carry bag.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Provincial Head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa commended the investigating team’s swift response.

“This serves as an example to all criminals out there that the public is tired of being scammed by people who are meant to protect them and we hope for a more suitable sentence.”

Kadwa encourages members of the public to report any police officials alleged to have been involved in criminal activities.

The suspects have been remanded in custody pending the investigation.

The case has been postponed to September 21 for the formal bail application.
