With criminal activity and identity theft on the rise, it is important to really know who you are employing.
Background vetting specialists Managed Integrity Evaluation (MIE) encourages all businesses and households to conduct comprehensive online checks on potential employees, tenants and service providers.
While the service was previously restricted to large organisations and corporations, the process has since been simplified affording everyone across the country the opportunity to verify who they are hiring and prioritise their safety.
MIE’s 10th annual background screening index showed that close to two million background checks were requested last year.
While criminal checks remain the most highly requested check year-on-year, there was a 700% increase in social media requests.
“Although risk levels dropped in 2020, these are expected to increase in 2021, due to increased unemployment and economic strain,” said MIE head of communications Jennnifer Barkhuizen
According to Barkhuizen, desperation can often increase the risk of candidates misrepresenting their professional, criminal and academic histories to secure a job opportunity.
“There is also the threat of criminals posing as employees for the purposes of committing a crime.
All employers, whether it be large organisations or individuals employing household help, should be able to perform the necessary due diligence to make an informed decision.”
