Rand Merchant Bank teams up with Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation
Daughter of the late great Hugh Masekela, takes the time with family to honour culture, art and music in their latest exhibition organised by both the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation and Rand Merchant Bank in Sandton.
Four years after the passing of the soulful and talented folk musician and trumpeter, Hugh Masekela, famously known as Bra Hugh, the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation together with Rand Merchant Bank partnered to showcase a special exhibition of personal memorabilia and photographs of the late musician.

Titled Home is where the Heart is, the media launch of the exhibition on July 6 had no more than 20 participants discussing the impact that Bra Hugh had locally and globally. The majority of the photographs that were on display were taken by Bra Hugh’s personal photographer, Brett Rubin.

Not only was the focus centred on the life of the talented trumpeter, but it also included artworks from African artists and photographers, as well as the golden trumpet which Louis Armstrong gave to him.

“The sole purpose of the foundation is to preserve and appreciate all kinds of cultures through art and music. That was his passion and that is why he [Bra Hugh] created the foundation, not to be admired but to educate. Rand Merchant Bank was kind enough to collaborate with us on this project,” said Bra Hugh’s daughter, Pule Twala.

His nephew, Mabushe Masekela shared phenomenal memories of his uncle with guests. What mostly stood out during his discussion was his love and appreciation for music through the guidance of his uncle and those who musically inspired Bra Hugh such as Louis Armstrong, Miriam Makeba, Stevie Wonder and many more.

The exhibition is now open to the public at the ‘Art and About’ section located at 8 Merchant Place in Sandton. A few portraits will be available for purchase until the final viewing day at the Rand Merchant Bank on August 20.
