Bastille Day, a French holiday which reflects the period of the French revolution that dates back to 1789, is often celebrated in various parts of the world on July 14.

According to Rene De Schouwer, a representative of the pétanque Morningside Country Club department, the National French holiday is celebrated as the day when the people of Paris stormed the Bastille fortress (prison), which was the symbol of oppression by the monarchy.

The Morningside Country Club venue saw about 40 participants who took time off from work to join in on the festivity. On arrival, guests were each given a beret of their own picking.

Food and drinks were constantly offered followed by fun activities such as getting a caricature of themselves and playing pétanque, a sport similar to lawn bowling.

CEO of the Gold Coin Exchange and the Scoin Shop Rael Demby shared his view on Bastille Day. “Our company has very close relations with France and we chose today to honour and celebrate their wonderful national holiday.

The majority of the people really enjoyed themselves especially during the pétanque session. Liberté, égalité, fraternité.” [Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

“We had loads of fun, food and drinks. Just getting to know people and learning more about world history was fantastic. I enjoyed winning my first game of pétanque and it won’t be the last time I play,” said one of the guests, Theri Choenyana.
