OneSight has a vision in Alexandra

Through important, long-term partnerships, Rays of Hope is aiming to make an all-around impact in the community.

With this in mind, the local community organisation recently partnered with non-profit organisation OneSight, working to eradicate the global vision care crisis. OneSight visited Rays of Hope in Marlboro to ensure better eye care for its staff, learners and many from the surrounding Alexandra community.

“The experience is always emotional, you get to have people in their 50s or 60s who have never had an eye examination in their lives and OneSight brought that to them,” said OneSight country manager Lameez Eksteen.

“Out of the 1 500 people who were pre-screen in the weeks leading up to the visit, a total of 450 people received high-level eye screenings and were supplied with glasses where necessary.
“The reaction we got from some of the beneficiaries who got their glasses on the same day was just priceless. Working with Rays of Hope showed that they really knew the community and that made it easy for us as well to be able to do our work,” said Eksteen.

The team also provided some of the Rays of Hope staff with training on how to perform basic eye screening tests which will allow the organisation to continue to work towards the goal of improving community eye care and health.

“Thank you so much [to] OneSight for such a life-changing experience. The majority of our beneficiaries and partners who had eye tests a month ago now have their glasses and they couldn’t be happier.

“Life will be so much easier now that everyone has the ability to be independent, from a little child attending school to an elderly woman who wants to read, organise or watch TV,” Rays of Hope shared in a message of thanks on social media.
