Strategies to curb crime

Colonel Sergeant Cain Sibitane, the head of the Sandton police crime prevention unit urges the youth of Sandton to be more active and engaged in crime prevention initiatives.

Through their ongoing battle against crime, members of the Sandton Police Station have been dedicating their time and resources to finding new ways of reducing crime in specific areas situated in Sandton.

Head of the crime prevention unit, Colonel Sergeant Cain Sibitane, who has been working at the station since 2017 shared his views on how communities can further reduce crime in the area.

“If you dive in deeper into the situation, you start realising that it’s all about education. Communities need to be taught from the beginning about crime prevention. Law and crime have to be taught in schools at an early age so that children know right from wrong and the consequences of various actions in society.

While touching on the subject of the younger generation equipping themselves with education as their ultimate guide, Sibitane touched on the challenges that he sees within the youth of Sandton.

“As I speak to you, I have Warrant Officer Cynthia Segoa who is responsible for the establishment of the youth desk. Unfortunately, in Sandton, young people do not engage enough with us.
“Our main goal is to connect with them because they are more active than their parents and they see what good and bad things are happening in our communities. As our community police forum (CPF) meetings are increasing, we are hoping that younger people join the meeting. Their voices are important.”

Sibitane pleads with his community to report anything suspicious in the community and that more of the youth join their youth desk which will both empower them and the community.
