City of Joburg reaches milestone with the Taxi Industry for Rea Vaya Phase 1C (a)
Alexandra Taxi Association thanked all the partners and stakeholders involved from the city, ARMSTA and ATA, that decided to work together to move forward as a society and gain sufficient services.
The City of Joburg’s MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene together with the chairpersons of various taxi associations signed a 12-year bus operating company agreement on June 27 at the Watt Interchange in Wynberg.
The signing of the contract by the City and the affected public transport operators represented by Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand, Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta) and Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) is a key milestone for the operation of the new Rea Vaya route from the Joburg central business district to Alexandra, Greenstone and Sandton.

This momentous and significant landmark will transform the affected public transport operators to become shareholders in the newly established Alexandra bus operating company (ABC). The company will manage the operation of Rea Vaya Phase 1C (a) BRT services.
“Today the City of Joburg is proud to support the affected public transport operators towards the conclusion of the bus operating company agreement which is key for the formation of the bus operating company for Rea Vaya Phase 1C (a) – a new route from the Joburg CBD to Alexandra, Greenstone and Sandton,” said Kunene.

He added ABC’s major task at hand was to operate the interim phase for the roll-out of the operation of the Rea Vaya buses before the end of this year and to start with the process of the acquisition of the 141 new Rea Vaya buses. This was to be implemented through the bus operating company agreement for 12 consecutive years in respect of the National Land Transport Act.
The introduction of Phase 1C (a) would offer safe, affordable and reliable transport to the residents of Berea, Yeoville, Orange Grove, Cheldondale, Norwood, Balfour Park, Bramley, Wynberg, Alexandra, Marlboro, Athol, Sandton, Sandown, Longmeadow and Greenstone.
