VOX POP: Residents share their opinions on the recent explosion in Johannesburg CBD

The explosion at the Johannesburg Bree Taxi has generated a lot of attention on social media.

Social media has been bustling with discussions about the explosion in Bree Street, Johannesburg.

Roads close to the Bree Street taxi stand had fractures as a result of the afternoon explosion on July 19.

At a media briefing today in the Johannesburg Central Business District, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi revealed that the bomb had an impact on Bree Street, Loveday Street, Klein Street, Rahima Moosa, and Plein Street on the western, eastern, southern, and northern sides of the city.

Sandton Chronicle took to the streets to ask residents What do they think caused the explosion? What would you do if the road exploded like it did in CBD?

Here is what they have to say:

Ofentse Nkambule: The explosion in Johannesburg was caused by a gas pipe leak. It is an emergency initially blamed on the underground eGoli pipes. If I was in that situation I would have run for my life.

Keamogetswe Kgaile: I do not think the gas caused the explosion because when you look at things gas is like air and air spreads, therefore there was supposed to be fire around there. We must also take into consideration that pressure changes but this is the first disaster and as well it won't be too strict. From my side, I think it is not a gas explosion, maybe it was something underground.

Khensani Penelope Macaleni: From my point of view I thought the cracked road was caused by the gas explosion but after the gas company eGoli posted a notice on their social media saying that all their gas pipelines are not leaking, they are all fine and they did an inspection on what happened.
