Young woman flourishes through hardships
Malunga Mushasha's disability did not stop her from achieving her dreams
Mulanga Mushasha, a 21-year-old Boston Media House public relations student and Rivonia resident, lives with an unidentified disability.
She grew up in a small village in the Venda region of Limpopo called HaMaila. When she was four years old, she fell ill; she was not born with a disability. She spent some time in a coma due to the illness, and when she finally came out, she was unable to move a muscle. The doctors tried their best to help her get better, but she was left with a disability.
“The trick of everything is that the disability is unknown, tests were run to try and figure out what caused it, but they all came back negative. My disability has traits of cerebral palsy, but I do not fall under that disability category, and that is why I prefer to say that I live with an unknown disability,” said Mushasha.
As a PR student with a disability, it is difficult for her to move around campus because it is not a disability-friendly space but she finds ways that help maneuver around campus.
“I am creative at heart; I write poetry, songs, and scripts, and I am also a blogger of Her Voice, The Blog plus an aspiring model, I am quite active and publish a journal called The Society.”

On October 27, 2022, the first issue of her online The Society magazine was released, and it featured Laura Wagnermeyer, a model who is crippled. When she was between the ages of eight and nine, reading magazines inspired her to start The Society because she enjoyed its layouts and sections, particularly the agony aunts and the comics.
“I was browsing through names that I could give to the magazine and they included a lot of teens within them because I was a teenager back then,”
Besides bringing up things that need to be spoken about in society, she wanted the magazine to be a space of empowerment, and that is how The Society came to light.
She looks up to many people, but at this particular moment, she would like to say Shudufhadzo Musida, Miss South Africa 2020.
