Sandton SAPS officers honoured as heroes

Sandton-based police officers were surprised with certificates acknowledging their work with children.

The National Centre for Child Protection hosted an intimate award ceremony for the purposes of honouring four Sandton SAPS officers for their work with children in Sandton and surrounds. Strongman, Danie Van Loggerenberg – along with Dayna Rowland and Kelly Harding from the centre for child protection – were joined by Mazi Asset Management’s Nolitha Mkhwanazi and CEO Malungelo Zilimbola in awarding the officers.

“We are very blessed and privileged to have invited some of the heroes in Sandton,” said Van Loggerenberg. “We are acknowledging the four of you as heroes for the children of Sandton. We want to say thank you.”

The four recipients of these awards were Sandton SAPS members: Constable Nkhensani Malatji, Sergeant Mpho Lechaba, Sergeant Raisibe Mokwena, and Captain Bheki Xulu. None of the officers had any idea what they had all been convened for.

“I’m so happy,” Sergeant Mokwena exclaimed upon receiving her certificate of acknowledgement.

“I’m overwhelmed and I’m happy,” said Sergeant Lechaba. “We were not expecting it. It’s nice to feel appreciated sometimes.”

According to Mazi CEO Malungelo Zilimbola, the initiative with Van Loggerenberg and the National Centre for Child Protection is one of Mazi’s ESG initiatives.

“ESG means environment, social and governance,” Zilimbola explained. “[This ceremony] is in terms of what we are doing as business in the society where we are placed; that’s what we are doing in sponsoring and partnering with the local community to look after destitute children.”
