WATCH: Fire guts shacks at informal settlement in Bryanston

No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Massive plumes of smoke filled the air as a large fire gutted parts of an informal settlement near the corner of Peter Place and Winnie Mandela Drive in Bryanston. Eyewitnesses noted the hearing explosions as flames spread rapidly.

Emergency services worked to control the blaze, urging the public to keep the area clear. No injuries have been confirmed at this time, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services media liaison, Xolile Khumalo stated, “We confirm that The City of Johannesburg EMS is currently responding to a shacks-on fire incident on Cnr Peter Place and Winnie Mandela Drive. On arrival, EMS Firefighters found shacks and recycled material on fire. Firefighters are working hard to contain the blaze. No injuries have been reported at the moment.”
