Notice: Sandton water meters are to be shut off overnight

In its continued efforts to manage water demand across the region, JW will close meters in Sandton overnight, leaving residents without water.

Sandton residents will be without water tonight as Johannesburg Water (JW) continues its efforts to manage water demand across the region.

The water utility has notified its customers that meters will be closed from tonight (April 9) from 18:00 until 5:00 to decrease water usage in the Sandton region.

Areas affected by the Sandton Water system include:

  • Linbro Park direct feed,
  • Linbro Park reservoir,
  • Marlboro direct feed,
  • Marlboro reservoir,
  • Illovo reservoir and Illovo tower,
  • Bryanston reservoir and Bryanston tower, and
  • Morningside reservoir.

In a statement, JW explained that to ensure supply to other areas in the Johannesburg water network, it has resorted to water throttling to ensure sufficient supply and manage water demand across the entire Johannesburg region.

“The Linbro Park and Malboro direct feeds will be affected the most during these interventions, and all customers fed by the Sandton system may experience poor pressure to no water overnight,” said the water utility.

While meters will be reopened in the morning, JW has encouraged residents in the affected areas to remain patient while water systems fully recover, stating that it may take a few hours before water pressure returns to normal.

JW has also cautioned its customers not to worry should they notice a brown tint in the water once meters have reopened. “There is no cause for concern. Let your tap run for a short while until the water clears.”

According to the water utility, the brown tint is caused by calcified minerals in older pipes. By leaving the tap running for a bit, these mineral deposits will be further loosened resulting in clear tap water.
