A water leak, on 9th Road in Kew, has been running for over two weeks, sparking frustration among residents who said the situation highlighted Johannesburg’s ongoing struggle with water infrastructure maintenance.
The leak, which appeared to be coming from a damaged utility cover near the kerb, has left water streaming onto the road, creating muddy conditions and raising concerns about further infrastructure damage and wasted clean water.
Residents say they flagged the problem on the Ward 81 community group chat, calling for urgent action.
Johannesburg Water was notified of the matter on September 7.

Spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala initially responded: “We have noted your query and are liaising with the relevant depot to get more information for you.
Johannesburg Water will respond within our standard turnaround time of 48 hours, depending on the complexity of the matter and the input required from relevant technical departments.”
Since then, Johannesburg Water has gone quiet. We passed by the site on September 18, and found it taped off, to enclose the leak. However, no repair work has yet been completed.
We, again, emailed Johannesburg Water on the same day, to enquire about the status of the damaged infrastructure. We are awaiting their response and will publish it as soon as we receive it.
