Gautrain and Rea Vaya team up to fight Joburg’s traffic nightmare

Gautrain and Rea Vaya are calling time on Joburg’s gridlock, and this is how they plan to get you out of traffic and into public transport.

If you have ever sat through Sandton’s morning gridlock wondering why you left the house, Gautrain and Rea Vaya want you to know, they are coming for your traffic problem.

As part of Transport Month, the two transport giants joined forces on October 24, in a bold street activation that turned one of Sandton’s busiest intersections into a live reminder of what life could look like if more people ditched their cars.

The message was simple: Joburg can’t move if everyone insists on driving.

“Congestion is no longer just a freeway issue. It starts right outside your gate,” said Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe.

He added that we need a shift in mindset, and that starts with using public transport.

The campaign is not just about awareness – it’s part of a bigger plan to connect Gautrain with Rea Vaya, A Re Yeng, PRASA, and even minibus taxis through the Gautrain Midibus Service, creating a smoother, safer, and more affordable transport network.

Affordability is key. The Gautrain’s KlevaMova card, launched in May, already offers 50% discounts for students, pensioners, low-income earners, and SASSA disability grant recipients. Nearly 6 000 people have been approved so far.

City of Johannesburg Transport executive director Lutando Maboza said the city’s new Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan will take this even further.

The three-year project aims to connect roads, buses, trains, and pedestrian routes across all seven regions of the city.

“This Transport Month, we are asking South Africans to be part of the solution, use public transport,” Kgobe said.
