Peregrine Capital’s 24SumMore Maths Competition proves maths can be fun
In Sandton, learners mixed strategy, speed, and creativity to become winners of the maths competition.
Peregrine Capital’s offices in Sandton buzzed with excitement on October 31 as 18 bright young finalists gathered for the 24SumMore Maths Competition Finals.
The event capped off a pilot programme involving 54 primary schools across Gauteng, all united by one goal: to make maths enjoyable, engaging, and confidence-building for learners.

From the start, 24SumMore reimagined maths as something thrilling and social rather than intimidating.
Inspired by the 24 Game challenge format, the competition rewards quick thinking, strategy, and mental agility. Classrooms turned into lively hubs of discovery as learners and teachers embraced the challenge with enthusiasm.

Jacques Conradie, CEO of Peregrine Capital and a former national maths champion, said, “We are bringing the fun back into maths. When kids enjoy maths, they gain confidence. That confidence becomes the foundation for future excellence. Confident kids don’t just solve problems; they love solving them.”
The 18 finalists, a mix of Grade 4 to Grade 6 learners, showcased impressive focus and composure under pressure.
Top honours went to:
1st – Olwethu Ndebele (Eastleigh Primary School)
2nd – Talea Papa (Gibson Pillay Learning Academy)
3rd – Kemoratile Nyundu (Eastleigh Primary School)
Winners received investment accounts, R25 000, R15 000, and R10 000, respectively, while all finalists walked away with R5 000 each.
Their schools also received matching prizes, and one standout teacher took home a brand-new iPad in recognition of their dedication.
Peregrine Capital chose investment prizes to inspire financial literacy and future-minded thinking among young learners.

Following the overwhelming success of the pilot, the 24SumMore Maths Competition will go national in 2026, inviting learners from grades 4 to 6 across South Africa to join in.

Peregrine Capital hopes to continue cultivating a new generation of problem-solvers who see maths not as a subject to fear, but as a skill to celebrate.
“What we have seen in the pilot has been extraordinary. The passion and joy from learners and teachers alike are just the beginning.
Congratulations to all our finalists, you have done yourselves, your families, and your schools proud,” said Conradie.
