Deadly Bryanston home invasion prompts eBlockwatch’s festive safety surge

The Bryanston community is still mourning the fatal shooting of a local father, prompting eBlockwatch to activate its Cyber Chaperone safety network while police continue the manhunt for three armed suspects.

The Bryanston community is still reeling after a young father was shot dead in front of his wife and two children in a late-night attack outside his home earlier this month.

As police intensify their manhunt for three suspects linked to the violent home invasion, local safety network eBlockwatch has launched an upgraded version of its Cyber Chaperone project to help protect residents during the high-risk festive period.

eBlockwatch founder Andre Snyman said the recent killing has highlighted how vulnerable residents are during late-night movements between entertainment areas and their homes, the same window of danger his teams believe may have been exploited in this attack.

“We can’t change what happened. But we can change how exposed we are. Most of us are fairly secure once we’re inside our homes. The danger zone is the gauntlet between where we go out for dinner or entertainment and our front door. Friday nights, Saturday nights, late nights that open stretch is where we are most vulnerable.”

Synman said eBlockwatch has launched an intensified festive-season enforcement plan, with Cyber Chaperone at its core. The project, tested over the past four years, provides real-time monitoring and virtual escort support to members travelling home or heading out during peak crime hours.

“We kicked it off last week, and we’re ramping it up again this week. We’re giving all members a link so that if you’re out on the road, we can help you watch that vulnerable space between out there and home, and also help you as you travel for the holidays. It puts visible presence and support out there in those open spaces where you normally feel alone.”

Police manhunt continues, no arrests yet

SAPS Johannesburg District spokesperson Mpho Tshetlhane confirmed that detectives are still pursuing leads following the deadly home invasion in which three armed suspects confronted the family in the early hours of November 13.

The 37-year-old father was shot during a struggle before the suspects ransacked the home, fleeing with jewellery and cellphones. He later died in the hospital.

“Investigations are still ongoing, and no one has been arrested as yet,” Tshetlhane said. “We continue to urge community members with information to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Sandton Police Station, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app to submit anonymous tip-offs.
