Dangerous sinkhole opens on Chaplin Street in Illovo
A growing sinkhole at 15 Chaplin Street in Illovo has raised safety concerns among residents and motorists, with calls for urgent permanent repairs.
A dangerous sinkhole has developed on Chaplin Street in Illovo, prompting concern from residents and road users who fear it poses a serious risk to motorists.
The hole, which has opened up in the roadway near number 15 Chaplin Street, is currently partially cordoned off with a large yellow safety barrier.

Resident Oscar Maswanganye said the issue was reported to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) on February 5, and temporary safety measures were only put in place on February 11 by JRA.
While the barrier alerts drivers to the hazard, the sinkhole remains exposed in the middle of the road.

Motorists travelling through the area are forced to slow down abruptly or swerve, particularly during busy traffic periods.

Maswanganye has expressed concern that the situation could worsen if not addressed urgently, especially if it collapses beneath the surface. There are also fears that a vehicle could be damaged or a motorist injured if the hole expands.
