Rain disrupts final day action at Ken Short Water Polo Festival as matches halted by lightning

Overcast conditions and heavy rain delay fixtures while teams deliver strong performances across pool and basketball courts

A dramatic change in weather conditions marked the final day of the Ken Short Water Polo Festival, as overcast skies and cooler temperatures moved in over Johannesburg.

Despite the cool conditions, teams returned to the pool determined to close out the tournament strongly, delivering competitive encounters before severe weather interrupted proceedings.

• Bishops Diocesan College beat Parktown Boys’ High School 12–1.
• Westville Boys’ High School beat Grey College 6–1.
• Selborne College beat Pretoria Boys High School 7–1.
• Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) beat Maritzburg College 6–5.
• St John’s College beat Michaelhouse 5–3.
• St Stithians College beat Durban High School 6–1.
• St David’s beat Westville Boys’ High School 7–1.
• Kearsney College beat King Edward VII School 4–2.
• Selborne College beat St Benedict’s College 11–0.

Several fixtures remained scheduled, including St John’s College vs Kearsney College, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool vs Selborne College, and Pretoria Boys High School vs Bishops Diocesan College.

Following a turn in the weather, which included lightning and heavy rain, several water polo matches on March 1 were placed on hold.

Results from matches completed on March 1:

• Westville Boys’ High School beat Jeppe 2–1.
• Grey College beat St Benedict’s College 8–3.
• King Edward VII School beat Maritzburg College 6–2.
• St David’s beat Durban High School 12–1.
• St John’s College and St David’s drew 3–3.

The storm also brought an early end to the basketball programme, with final matches cancelled after courts became too wet and unsafe for play.

Despite the weather disruption, the festival once again showcased high-quality school water polo and basketball, highlighting strong competition throughout the tournament.
