Leadership launches turnaround drive at Sandown High
Principal Johan Lourens outlines academic, discipline, and infrastructure reforms aimed at raising results and restoring pride.
A renewed sense of purpose is taking shape at Sandown High School as newly appointed principal Johan Lourens implements an ambitious turnaround strategy.
The school’s 2025 matric results reflected a 79% pass rate, with 38% achieving bachelor passes. Lourens believes those figures do not reflect the school’s true potential. “In a nutshell, many areas need improvement, curriculum, sport, and behaviour. Our learners deserve excellence, and that is what we are building,” he said.

He added that the strategy was structured around measurable milestones within 30, 60, and 90 days. Early interventions have centred on restoring discipline, improving punctuality, and ensuring correct uniform compliance.
“Discipline is not about punishment. It is about creating a stable environment where teaching and learning can flourish. Grade 12 learners are our immediate priority, with additional Saturday classes and targeted support for at-risk and progressed learners.”

Dr Larry Harmer, part of the leadership team, said noticeable cultural shifts were already evident.
“Two weeks into the process, learners are responding positively. There is less movement during lesson time, more structure and greater professionalism among staff,” Harmer said. He pointed out that the School Governing Body had also been supportive and actively engaged.

Lourens is calling on alumni and corporates to partner in strengthening facilities and programmes. “Sandown must become the school of choice. We want learners to join us from Grade 8 and walk the journey through to Grade 12.”
He concluded by stating that he had a clear academic target and a firm focus on discipline and stakeholder involvement, and that he believed this was the school’s sunrise moment.
