Johannesburg Roads Agency to appoint a service provider to investigate Hobart Park stormwater damage

Following concerns raised by councillor Lynda Shackleford, JRA says the service provider will be appointed to investigate the cause of the damage.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said it is aware of the stormwater damage in Hobart Park and has begun the investigations.

This follows concerns raised by Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford during a site visit on March 6, warning that the deteriorating infrastructure could pose safety and environmental risks if not addressed soon.

JRA Department for Infrastructure Development HOD Kwazelela Mcetywa said, “The JRA is aware of the stormwater damage. An initial site inspection was conducted on 26 June 2025 with EISD [Environmental and Infrastructure Services Department] and City Parks, and the erosion was not severe at the time.

“JRA conducted a follow-up visual assessment on March 13, 2026, in response to the recent complaint. Outcomes of the inspection will be sent in due course.”

Mcetywa added that a service provider will be appointed to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the root cause and appropriate course of action.

When asked about the expected timelines for the repairs, he said, “Timelines have not been determined at this stage. The affected area will be secured and barricaded to ensure public safety while necessary investigations and project processes are being undertaken to address the issue.”
