Katherine Street closed after shooting incident in Sandown, Sandton

Motorists to face major delays in Sandton after a shooting incident led to the closure of Katherine Street beneath the Grayston Drive overpass, with police still processing the crime scene.

A section of Katherine Street in the Sandown area of Sandton has been closed to traffic following a shooting incident reported on the afternoon of April 9.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that the road has been shut down beneath the Grayston Drive overpass while the South African Police Service and other authorities process the crime scene. A significant police presence remains on site.

The incident was initially reported at about 14:15, prompting an emergency response and the cordoning off of the affected area. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting or whether there were any injuries or arrests.

Traffic disruptions are expected to intensify during the afternoon peak period, with delays likely on several major routes in and around Sandton. These include Katherine Street in both directions, Grayston Drive, the M1 highway off-ramps at Grayston Drive, as well as nearby West Street and Rivonia Road.

JMPD officers have been deployed to manage traffic and assist with diversions, and motorists have been urged to remain patient and follow instructions from officials on the ground.

Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes such as Marlboro Drive, Sandton Drive, Rivonia Road and South Road until the roadway is reopened.

Police have been approached for an official statement, and further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
